We were blessed with fantastic weather for this year's event, which saw a range of paddlers from Carlisle, Copeland, Penrith and West Cumbria clubs battling it out again. Big thank-you to all the volunteers who make this event possible, and of course to Sue & Dave at Derwent Water Marina and their staff Rob & Lisa who man the safety boats and prepare the boats and equipment. Penrith were determined to retain the trophy and bringing 22 paddlers they certainly were the favorites. But things didn't go their way in the first race with Penrith A beaten convincingly by the WCCC A team - but they made up for it in the next race with a winning pace to set up a final between the two Penrith teams. Here is a link to the folder with all the photos for the event. Feel free to download any you want.

Super long weekend based out of Budle Bay. Weather was kind to us, and although a touch blowy with swell the first couple of days. First day was the regular afternoon trip to Dunstanburgh Castle and back from Beadnell. Next day some of the group did Spittal Beach to Eyemouth one way, with others in the group choosing the Tweed estuary paddle up to the Chain Bridge and back. Shel enjoyed a cake (Thank you Ellen) and Fizz to celebrate her birthday (don't ask which). it calmed down a bit more on Sunday and we had a coastal trip out and back to North Sunderland from Beadnell, trying to keep sheltered from the relatively strong SW winds. Finally on Monday we enjoyed a glorious trip to the inner Farne with all the arriving bird life (minus Arctic terns - which we were just ahead of...). Trip back had a bit of a roller coaster in the channel with the very strong spring tide. What is not to like! Sorry to those of you who couldn't get on the trip - which booked up in four hours. Hopefully we'll have other things for you later in the year.. We were blessed with gorgeous weather on an evening that saw thirty three of us paddle out to St Herbert's Island for a social get together and barbeque. Thanks so much to Becca, organising her first club social event so successfully, with able assistance from sous chefs Alan, Mark and Helen. Three great days kayaking from Brighouse Bay organised by Shel and Alan. Friday - had four of us out in a blustery force four/five that meant we didn't go much outside Brighouse Bay and ended up playing in the waves in the bay for a few hours. Saturday - had a larger group of thirteen in the best conditions of the weekend. Paddled from a new get in on the north shore of Ross Bay. Out through the ebbing channel at Little Ross with a bit of bounce as this met the last of the westerly Solway ebb, then on to brighouse bay for a lunch stop before returning via the islands on the west entrance to Brighouse, around Little Ross and up the channel towards Kirkcudbright, stopping briefly at the flood accessible beach at Nun Mill Bay, and then returning against the wind back to Ross Bay. Sunday - had an even larger group of 14 in slightly windier conditions. Visited the Fleet Isles from Brighouse Bay, with some of the group returning from east of Barlocco Island to get back before the wind escalated later in the afternoon. A smaller group circumnavigated the rest of the Fleet Isles before returning in conditions that were Can really recommend Solway View as a campsite and they were so accomodating to allow us to launch from their land on Ross Bay, even offering to strim the path down to the beach if we let them know in advance!
They also have plenty of space round the pitches which allowed us to meet socially as a group for our after dinner shenanigans. Thanks to participants and organisers for a fun weekend. |
